Cultivating Youth Leadership (CYL): The Urban Farm Project is an initiative to build youth leadership through community food security.
This Youth Leadership and community development initiative engaged youth in their community in organic farming/gardening, community food animation, social entrepreneurship, environmental stewardship and health promotion. The CYL Project provided youth with an opportunity to learn about community food security, local food production system, the natural environment and community development through hands on practical farm/garden work, life skill training, leadership development and civic engagement activities.
Program objectives:
To provide youth in the Jane-Finch, Jamestown and Lawrence Heights neighbourhoods employment opportunities to develop employment, leadership, and entrepreneurial skills that will enhance participants well-being
To improve youths’ knowledge and skills in organic agriculture and environmental stewardship
To increase youths’ civic engagement and social networks
To improve youths’ health-related knowledge and behaviours (e.g., diet, exercise,) to address and prevent obesity
To increase youth participants and communities awareness of local food system and food security issues
To increase local community food access to culturally appropriate foods
To build sustainable partnerships for youth development with local agencies
